Paul Chesser Says it Well!

The American Spectator carries an article that I believe speaks well about the seemingly inconsistency of some SB leaders. This is from an observer that doesn’t have a dog in the fight. I have high respect for many signers of the SBECI, but I just do not understand their reasoning. My biggest concern is that we now have a group of people who have advocated expository preaching declaring that preachers begin an ecological topical sermon series, but we do not have scientific evidence that we have Global Warming.

It appears that something is strangely amiss. The ERLC is the “official” arm of the SBC that addresses social and moral concerns and their implications on public policy issues. But they have not, and apparently cannot, sign off on this document.

  1. I wish Paul had done his homework on the origination of the work and not just the content. It is not the SBC who is promoting this. But, his points as a response on the work itslef are “spot on”.

  2. I thought your expositional vs. topical thing was as or more insightful than Chesser’s comment.

it’s getting kind of hot in my office. you reckon it could be global warming? :)

  4. So, what’s the inconsistency in the words/actions of Southern Baptist leaders like Page, Dockery, Akin, and George?

Actually, Chesser’s article seems to be in disagreement with Bart Barber’s recent post which stated that Southern baptists are in agreement on Creation Care but not sure about Global Warming.

Clearly, Chesser is not in agreement on Creation Care. After all, he declares that their is no principle in the Bible to “exercise stewardship.” Even the 2006 Resolution, On Environmentalism And Evangelicals, argues that such a biblical principle exists: “God created men and women in His image and likeness….commanding them to EXERCISE CARING STEWARDSHIP..over the earth and environment.” Even back in 1990, the messengers to the Annual Meeting called on Southern Baptists to “recognize publicly our responsibility to God to be better stewards of all of the created order.”

So Tim, do you stand with the SBC on Creation Care or with Chesser who doesn’t seem to have any qualms about polluting the earth? ;-)

  7. Brother BDW,

Do you think Dr. Page is really a great authority on this thing seeing he says he agrees with the last to resolutions and he also agrees with this SBECI? They both do not say the same.

    Brother Bob,

I, as you, will burn the battery out before the 80,000 mile warranty. :>) I own a hybrid Honda, but as BDW has so eloquently asked: “ So Tim, do you stand with the SBC on Creation Care or with Chesser who doesn’t seem to have any qualms about polluting the earth? It seems that I have no qualms in polluting the earth since that battery in the hybrid will have to be buried somewhere.

    Brother David,

Brother CB authorized Bob to get that sissy-fied car. He has that “PRECIOUS LITTLE SNOT SPITTING DOG :>)

    Blessings,
    Tim

  8. lets put cb’s new mini dog into a flintstones type car. he could generate energy by running inside the engine to move the kind of car that bob is now driving. it’s kind of like a go cart with a body. the mini dog could get it moving, and we’d save a whole dinosaur a year on fuel.

  9. Tim,

I tend to agree with Chesser. This latest declaration has gotten a bit under my skin. It contains a tacit acceptance of the notion of man-induced global warming … a thoroughly humanistic notion. I really do think the signatories should have given it much more thought before adding their name.

I will be posting on this at length for the next two days at http://sbcimpact.net (now that my turn in the rotation has rolled around). :)

  14. Tim, next time you come to visit CB, I’ll take you for a ride in my high-ridin’ 1983 4wd Dodge Ramcharger. The one with the fire-breathin’ smallblock Mopar, thoroughly warmed over. Or maybe in my 1989 Chevy S10, you know, the one with the monster 350 in it…..

I have plenty of time to show folks around in them, since I rarely have to spend time at gas pumps.

I don’t know about global warming, but I know my heart’s all warmed by the fact that we’re all bent out of shape by the environment, but apparently not by predators in the pulpit or by 7 or 8 million supposed members we can’t find. At least not enough to take any collective action to help remedy those things.

    Comment by Bob Cleveland — March 16, 2008 @ 6;38 am

  15. Bob,
How about adding to the list of getting bent our of shape: the lost in our own country? Maybe the 7 to 8 million includes this group.

As for predators in pulpit, each church must stand up and take responsibility. Florida was warned and did nothing! That to me is as disgusting!
